Meine Filmkritik:

Schrecklich! Aber trotz aller meiner Vorbehalte gegen diesen Film muß ich zugeben, dass ich den Death Race 2 nicht un-unterhaltsam fand. Das er mit einer langen Szene anfängt, in der Sean Bean als schlecht gelaunter Gangsterboß Markus Kane über Fußball (!) diskutiert und in bester Fußballfan-Tradition das letzte Spiel von "Manchester United" in Grund und Boden kritisiert, ist ein kleines Highlight und jeder, der zwei Dinge mehr über den Schauspieler weiß als das er den Boromir im "Herrn der Ringe" gespielt hat, fängt da an zu schmunzeln.

Der Film sagt also von Anfang an: "Nehmt mich nicht zu ernst" - und das ist vielleicht schon alles, was es braucht. Death Race 2 gibt nicht irgendetwas vor, sondern erzählt seine Story absolut geradlinig: Wir befinden uns in einer sehr nahen Zukunft auf einer Gefängnisinsel, die von einer privaten Gesellschaft betrieben wird und Gewinn machen muß: Das wird erreicht mit skrupellosen Gladiatorkämpfen zwischen den Insassen. Wer seinen Gegner tötet, gewinnt seine Freiheit - so wird es versprochen. Die Kämpfe werden auf einem PayTV-Sender ausgestrahlt und die Idee geht auf eine eiskalte Schöne zurück, die weniger Herz hat als der fieseste Gefängnis-Insasse! Diese Kämpfe laufen unter dem Namen "Death Match", aber unglücklicherweise gehen die Zuschauerzahlen rapide nach unten - also muß eine neue spektaktuläre Idee her.

Hier schlägt nun die große Stunde von Carl Lucas (Luke Goss), einem Mitglied von Markus Kanes (Sean Bean) Bande, der während eines schrecklich fehlgeschlagenen Bankraubs einen Wachmann erschossen hat. Der Film betont, das Carl Lucas so eine Art "guter" böser Kerl ist, denn er hat Jobs wie diesen seit 20 Jahren erledigt ohne jemals Gewalt anwenden zu müssen. Es ist alles die Schuld von Markus Kanes Neffen, der das erste Mal dabei ist und sich um gar nichts schert. Carl Lucas wiedersteht auch tapfer, als ihm die Staatsanwaltschaft Straffreiheit anbietet, wenn er nur gegen seinen langjährigen Boß aussagt.

Carl Lucas hat also diese Art dunkler, aber positiver Aura, die es braucht damit wir mit ihm fühlen können - neben einem wirklich gut trainierten Körper, den wir immer wieder mal zu sehen bekommen, denn es ist offenbar Sommer und wegen der großen Hitze müssen sich die Gefangenen immer wieder Teile ihrer Kleidung entledigen - so weit als möglich und so oft als möglich - und mit dem ganzen Schmutz in so einem Gefängnis müssen die Insassen halt auch immer wieder mal unter die Duschen springen...

Es ist Sommer... und sehr heiß und schmutzig... die Jungs müssen immer wieder einmal gesäubert werden...(Doch, wir SIND in einem Autorennen-Film...)

Schon während der Verfolgungsjagd nach dem Banküberfall haben wir gesehen, dass Lucas ein wirklich guter Fahrer ist. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass unsere eiskalte Schöne angesichts des großen Geschicks, das Lucas hinter dem Steuer eines Schrottwagens zeigt, den die Gefängnis-Insassen eigentlich auseinandernehmen sollen, auf die Idee zum "Death Race" kommt: Schwer bewaffnete Autos - attraktive "Babes" als Beifahrerinnen - und wer alle anderen umbringt während des dreitägigen Rennens gewinnt die Freiheit. Nur dumm für unseren gezeichneten Helden, dass Sean inzwischen einen Verdacht gegen Lucas hegt und eine Million Dollar Belohnung für denjenigen verspricht, der ihn umbringt...

Es kommt wie es kommen muß: Das "Death Race" generiert höchste Zuschauerraten, die Hälfte der Teilnehmer gibt schon am ersten Tag den Löffel für immer ab und Lucas' Wagen wird durch Sabotage so beinträchtigt, dass er unfairerweise am zweiten Tag das Rennen, seine Gesundheit und seinen makellosen Körper verliert, als sein Auto Feuer fängt...

Von nun an wird er nur noch mit einer Maske und unter dem Decknamen "Frankenstein" auftreten...

Da Death Race 2 das Prequel zum erfolgreichen "Death Race"-Film mit Jason Stratham aus 2008 ist, ist dies das notwendige Ende der Film-Geschichte.

Man kann natürlich sagen, das das alles ein großer Haufen Unsinn ist, aber man kann auch sagen, dass es sich um eine gar nicht so unsinnige Übertreibung der Wirklichkeit handelt: Gladiatoren haben zur Unterhaltung der Massen im antiken Rom bis zum Tod gekämpft, und in durchaus "seriösen" Automobil-Ausstellungen sind die hübschen "Babes" nie weit weg und die moderne Begeisterung für Autorennen, bei denen die Gefahr von schweren Unfällen immer gegeben ist, spricht ihre eigene Sprache. Und dann denke man nur an die ganzen Reality-Shows, die jedes Jahr noch grotesker werden! Der Film ist also überschattet durch eine gewisse Realitätsnähe, und dass ist kein Nachteil.

Ganz abgesehen davon liefern die Schauspieler ordentliche Arbeit ab, Danny Trejo scheint sich prächtig dabei zu amüsieren, einen mexikanischen Juden (Goldberg) zu spielen, der sich in Lucas Team wiederfindet und Sean Bean muß überhaupt nie selbst ein Auto fahren, kann so fies sein wie er mag und ist ansonsten immer beim Essen oder bereitet gerade ein solches zu!

Anzumerken bleibt noch, dass diesmal leider nicht Thorsten Michaelis, Sean Beans Stamm-Synchronsprecher, eingesetzt wurde. Das beeinträchtigt das Vergnügen an der deutschen Fassung doch sehr. Schade!

J: Can you tell us anything about your next film Death Race 2?

R: It’s complicated. At this time I can’t say much other than it’s going to be really good. I saw the original in the cinema and I was a fan. It had the feeling of Mad Max it was like a throwback to the action movies of the 80′s. A year ago I read in the trades magazines that Universal was making a sequel and I thought, man I’d love to do that picture. Then about 6 months ago my agent called me and asked if I wanted to read the script. I was extremely surprised and excited about it because the writing was so good, it’s a great prequel. It’s the story of the origins of the Death Race and the birth of the Frankenstein character....

EXCLUSIVE: More Cast Details for Death Race: Frankenstein Lives

Lensing began in South Africa on Death Race: Frankenstein Lives over the weekend. Apropos as, at the same time, Florida hosted the Daytona 500 minus the murder and mayhem, of course.

Shock Till You Drop has more details on who's joining Luke Goss and Tanit Phoenix in the prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 film.

As you may or may not know, Goss plays Carl "Luke" Lucas, a man framed by the mob for the murder of a police officer. Shock exclusively learned this afternoon that Sean Bean (pictured) will co-star as Luke's old mob boss; Ving Rhames is the man responsible for giving the greenlight to the Death Race (he's apparently a "Rupert Murdoch" type); Danny Trejo is Luke's pal in prison and Frederick Koehler will reprise his role as "Lists."

Anderson is on board as producer with Jeremy Bolt. Roel Reiné directs from a script by Tony Giglio.

Tanit Phoenix to Give Frankenstein a Lift in Death Race: Frankenstein Lives?

This South African sex symbol is just getting hotter by the day. Now that she's done playing with vampires in the upcoming flick Lost Boys: The Thirst, it's time for her to tackle yet another kind of beast ... one with a hot rod and and a bad attitude.

According to our brothers over at Geek Week, Phoenix is said to be in talks to join Luke Goss for the direct-to-video prequel to Death Race, now known as Death Race: Frankenstein Lives.

Goss will be playing Carl "Luke" Lucas, also known as the driver "Frankenstein," who has been framed by the mob for the murder of a cop. Once relocated to Terminal Island, he must engage in the famed Death Race as a means to stay alive.

Tanit is the frontrunner to play Elizabeth Jane Case, a card girl for the fight matches, later a navigator when the prisoners are forced to test their driving skills, who develops a 'close' bond with Lucas. She’s in prison for accidentally killing her cop husband.

Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt are producing. Shooting should begin soon with Roel Reiné at the director's helm.
